SHREVEPORT, LA — The Baroque Artists of Shreveport will present a concert entitled, “The Perfect Blend,” featuring Bach’s Coffee Cantata and refreshments from Shreveport’s Rhino Coffee. The concert is at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 26 in Anderson Auditorium at ÓéÀÖ³Ô¹Ï College’s Hurley School of Music, with a post-concert coffee and doughnut reception in the lobby. The event is free and open to the public.
The Bach Cantata tells the story of an eighteenth-century father who chides his daughter about the evils of drinking coffee and forbids her to marry if she continues her coffee habit.
The concert is a collaboration of local musicians in the Baroque Artists as well as faculty members at ÓéÀÖ³Ô¹Ï College and Northwestern State University. Vocalists featured will be ÓéÀÖ³Ô¹Ï College assistant professor Janani Sridhar, soprano; Northwestern assistant professor Adam Philley, bass baritone; and Northwestern student Douglas Flores, tenor.
Doug Bakenhus, professor of music and director of orchestras at Northwestern State, will perform a Vivaldi bassoon concerto. Laura Crawford, Dan Santelices, and Ruth Drummond will be featured in a Vivaldi version of the famous “La Folia” variations by Corelli scored for two violins and cello. Theresa Zale Bridges and Bakenhus will perform a Telemann work for oboe and bassoon. Rounding out the musician group will be Borys Smolaga, viola; Lois Robinson, bass; and Derrick Meador, harpsichord.
